Check engine light Ford focus?

I have a 2001 Ford Focus with a 2.0 single overhead cam
It has got a check engine light on and I need to know if theres a way of reading code without a scan tool.
I know on some gm you can ground the diag term and read codes and on some dodge you can cycle the key and read codes .......any way on this Ford >>? Thanks George
