how to fix a faulty screen?

When I switch my camera on to take a photo the screen is all black except for a narrow strip on the left hand side can I repair this

Sounds like you need to replace screen. I had a similar problem with my cannon and ended up buying a cheap broken camera on Ebay with intact screen in order to replace it. You can download how to replace screen from various sites on the web; it is a bit tricky though.
