Mend Remote Operate Help

sky+ remote and box only operate for 10 mins and then no good!!?

Hello if anyone can please help I would be really grateful. Our Sky+ box was working fine this afternoon but when i tried to change the channel with the remote it would not work (we changed batteries 2 weeks ago). I turned off box, left for 2 minutes and turned back on again and the remote worked for a couple of minutes but then no joy. I have turned box off 5 times tonight and even tried software update but that only resolves problems for a short time and goes back to usual problem. The 'remote light' on the box does respond when i press a remote button, but it does not do anything and neither do the buttons on the box. I have called sky and explained tried all of the above but all they have said is to book engineer but they cannot come for 8 days. Anyone here have any suggestions??

Hi Nick.

I'd let the engineer come and take a look if it's for free mate. As these replacement boxes only have a 3 month warranty, I'd get it replaced if at all possible, that way you'll have another 3 months peace of mind at least....and if the replacement box freezes after that time, at least you'll have an idea about how to fix it.

So far mines still working great by the way, so I'm hopeful that the fix has solved the problem now.

All the best.

OK I braved it and so far so good 1 hour in. Do you know if this is only a temporary solution or will it be long term? Don't know whether to cancel engineer for Saturday as the agent I spoke to said it would be a free call and I have just checked my bill and it is actually down as a free call out. Dont know whether just to let them come tell them tried everything and hope they replace the box because if it is already playing up 3 months after replacement - that can't be good right? My concern is if I do cancel the engineer and a few months pass and it goes again the warranty period will expire on the box we have and I will have to pay out £65 for another call out. What would you do if you were in my shoes??

Nick,

The formatting that I've just done on mine has only wiped the stuff in the planner, together with the Sky Anytime settings (the latter will update within a couple of days anyway, apparently). The fave channels are still saved and nothing else has been affected.

So far so good....it is still working. I tried the record function, and this has also worked okay. I'm so relieved to have fixed it as I was even considering upgrading to Sky HD and getting a new HD ready tv to watch it on rather than forking out for an engineer to come and press a couple of buttons!!

I hope you manage to sort yours too, good luck.

Before I try ... Does this not wipe your harddrive? This is a replacement box for us by the way we had our original sky+ box in May 2006 and last October/November it went into standby and did absolutely nothing completely stuck in standby we tried software upgrade as per your first answer and also tried harddrive re-boot which is your new answer no good. Following lots of calls and loads of problems with Sky (waited in all day for someone to come and they never did because someone at Sky cancelled job by mistake then when they turned up two weeks later the engineers were not told we needed a replacement box so we then had to wait another two weeks before it took the engineer for me to tell him and he came in and swapped machine in and out in 10 minutes!!!). So annoyed you only get refurb boxes to replace!!!

Hi Nick, me again!

Just to let you know that the problem with my sky+ box is the same as yours and that about 5 hours ago I did the hard disk format by holding the two left + right arrow buttons while switching on at the mains, then pressing SELECT when the green ring lights up.

I hadn't expected it to work, but thought I might as well try it.

Five hours on and the box has been on all this time and is still working (no way would it have done this before). Have you tried this yet?

Hi Richie Rich

Thanks for the reply. I tried that method on Thursday but same problem occurred after a couple of minutes box gives no response. I have just tried it again as did not turn off at mains last time but again same problem.

Thank you anyway

This is exactly the problem I had. Having looked at various answers on here for "won't come out of standby" I did this and, up 'til now, it has been okay:-

Switch off at mains.

Leave for a minute or two.

Press 'Backup' button on the sky box and at the same time switch on at mains, keeping the backup button pressed in until the three lights (remote, message and another) come on.

Release the backup button. A message should appear, saying "updating software - do not switch off - this could take up to 10 minutes".

After this, the box should appear to go into stanby. I then switched off at mains for a couple of minutes, then switched back on - and it worked.

I hope it works for you too!
