Mend Mercedes-Benz 308D Difficult Van Drive

difficult gear change mercedes308d van?

i drive a merc 308d van old 1993, not a high milage around 170000 it has always been a bit difficult to engage gears, but has recently become more difficult,
also noticed a rattle on gear stick. can anyone shed any light on what the problem could be .
