According to my Mondeo book K to T reg,,,faults listing of engine turning over but fails to start. I've taken out that not applicable as it was running but just stopped.
(1) Alarm or Immobilizer fault
(2) Ignition components damp or damaged
(3) Fuel cut off switch activated. Unfortunately the book only tells you how to replace it. It's located in the side panel of the front passenger footwell.... It may have been activated by a heavy bump, and I think it's a matter of pressing the button back in. This is a safety device to stop the engine in the event of an accident
(4) Broken, loose or disconnected wiring in ignition circuit
(5) Fuel injection system fault.
(6) Major mechanical failure ie: cam drive fault [Belt broken]
I've had this go on a Sierra, going along minding my own business and engine stopped, I de-clutched and drifted to a stop. Does this sound like your senario. Still the other tests done first though.
Know anyone in the AA /RAC breakdown who cover the person not the vehicle. Get them to come round and call out the breakdown service [You were taking them in the car]. They will tell you what's wrong.
P.S. they don't service the person just the car.
Sorry can't be of any more help than this.
