I had a similar problem with a 28" Philips tv. There was a smell of burning when it packed in, and the problem turned out to be a blue capacitor which had short circuited which appears to be a common problem. There may be a tell-tale sign of soot on the offending item if you look carefully, I actually had to turn on the tv with the cover removed to trace this. I am not a tv engineer but do have some basic knowledge of electrics and electronics, probing inside a tv set, even when turned off is highly dangerous as high voltage is stored in components for some time after power is removed. If you don't have an understanding of electronics and the ability to undertake some dismantling, then I would advise you to leave it to someone who has. the part for the repair in my case cost about a pound and took me a couple of hours.
