i had similar problem. Batteries lasted 1 yr and had to replace them. put new batteries in but the thermostat would not work. i folded foil paper, placed it at the base of the battery holder and it worked after this.

Needs recommissioning, after fiddling, known issue with Battery compartments, have emailed Drayton asking for replacement drawers for batteries.

some folks have used foil, cleaned contacts and bent prongs out I'd rather have proper functioning unit.

I had this problem too. I folded up some kitchen foil and inserted in front of the contacts inside each battery drawer at the foot. This held the batteries firmly against the contacts and solved the problem straight away.

I have similar problem with RF2 unit and called technical helpline. Problem still not 100% fixed but think they have had problems with battery drawers and sent 2 replacements free - some excuse about AA batteries being different sizes (??) and sometimes they are not touching the connectors properly. The left hand batteries control the display and the right hand batteries control the signal to receiver unit. They advised to take out right hand side drawer - look into unit and pull contact strips down slightly to improve connection and when this didn't work sent out new battery drawers. Worth a try - call 0845 1307722. This still hasn't fixed the problem with mine- not sure if it has something to do with where the receiver unit was placed - too close to the boiler as the instructions that came with the new battery drawers say it should be to the left of the boiler at minimum distance of 70cm - mine is underneath and much closer than that.

Sorry, not an answer but I have the same problem with my RF1. It occurs every few months that the unit goes completely dead, or else doesn't talk to the receiving unit so heating doesn't come on. Same thing happened last night. Only way I can get it to work is to faff around with the batteries and battery drawers, pulling out and pushing in. For some reason suddenly starts working. You can use the override button on the receiever unit to switch the heating on whilst you muck about with the RF1 stat. I'm trying to find a replacement stat unit but no luck so far.

if it is totally dead then yes, you will need a new one. there is a commisioning procedure to run through to reconfigure the wireless frequency but it sounds like your stat is fooked
