Why does immerssion heater keep tripping RCD?

yesterday it was working fine ......today every time i turn it on the rcd trips is this an indication of a faulty heater element?

Yes.
The RCD is doing its job. You'll probably find that the immersion element needs to be replaced. Don't keep resetting the RCD - replace the immersion.
