I wouldn't attempt to open it yourself and void any warranty that you may still have. If it uses a seperate power adapter that would be the first item to suspect and the store can easily check it.
Most stores keep records of their sales with name and address, so I'd still take it back. Otherwise, contact Alba Radio plc. 0870-873-0078, they can verify the date of manufacturer by the serial number. Many Freeview boxes come with extended warranty. Either way, if under warranty they will probably just change it free of charge.
