how to replace the return spring in a briggs and stratton?

had a broken pull cord and removed the return mech. and the spring popped out. How do I install the spring?
I can curl it inside of the plastic housing, but I am not sure of the direction to wind it and also how to connect the spring to the little prong just to the side of the motor shaft correctly?
Help please.
