Hitachi C D player works very occasionally but mostly says "no disc" Couple years old but little used

Try to remove the housing that covers the CD tray. There may be a few small screws. Once the cover is off you hopfully will find a CD that has escaped the tray and found it's way under the tray. If you cannot see in there, push the open button while ther cover is off and you may be in luck.
