what will happen if the cam belt has gone?

My car has stopped after overheating i stopped waited and filled with water, then checked the oil, waited and then tried to start the car and nothing after looking it appears that the cam belt has gone is this the case and what kind of damage would this have caused and is there any other explaination for this?

Think serious engine damage - valves drop and pistons rise to meet them - damaged pistons - bent con-rods - bent valves - you sure it's the cam belt?
