ahh, I've learned to hit the "reset" button. Though I forget every time, till dh reminds me. I have an older upright electrolux, the button is on the back of the canister. Try it, and see ... hope it's that simple for you!

make sure you have a bag in it and that the bag door is closed if it is an old lux if it is new the power head neck or the wands are probably bad bobsroswellvacuum.com can replace them for you
