what is the knocking noise ?

when driving i am getting a knocking noise from the front of the car especially over roughish ground, its a peugeot 205 L reg 1.8 DIESEL.

I used to drive 205's as taxi's in every case it was the drive shafts there's one short and one longer . they are very simple to change £150.00p to do it yourself goog luck, but they do knock for a long time though.
