V-reg 406 2.0 petrol estate. Had this too, drivers window keeps winding right down when ignition switched on?
- Took inner door panel and all the foam off, checked wiring, all ok and noted switch worked MUCH better when hanging down from wiring (?) Ha ha! Thought I'd fixed it so reassembled door but still erratic.
So - take out the switch trim panel as in Haynes 12.5 - remove wiring blocks from switch panel (big wiring block had pull-out red end to release it) and then the switch panel can be released from under the trim panel. Most of the release catches were broken on ours which meant A/ someone had been there before us and B/ needs duct-tape to hold it in properly later.
Our switch panel included electric mirror 4-way knob, so don't lose this OR the loose teeter-switch blocks OR the tiny white sprung switch centering buttons. Take the switch panel indoors and ready for surgery!
Careful examination of the switch panel (like a date box!) showed it was partially dismantleable by releasing plastic catches all around, which reveals some of the innards and printed circuit boards with the switches' contact points. A quick check of these showed a small sliver of plastic, probably from a broken release catch, was stuck in the silicone rubber of one of the switch contacts, causing it to be continually pushing down. Removed this, reassembled carefully with attention to WD, grit removal and any dead spiders etc, Bob's your aunties live-in lover! Seems like an incredibly unlikely thing to ever occur again but if it works for anyone else too then the world's a happier place.
Those switch blocks are £100 or so from the dealers...
