How can I fix a bad smell which appears to come from the washing machine?

There is a bad smell, like stale water or dampness, which seems to come from the washing machine? I would like to clean out the machine if possible. Is there anything I can put in the machine, say on a wash cycle, that can clean it out safely. Any help would be appreciated.

Try running the machine empty on the hottest cycle available with just one scoop of any bio powder. Do this every few months. If you use liquid detergents on low temperatures you will get this musty smell. Don't forget to clean out the rubber "ring" around the porthole and leave the door ajar after each wash. Hope this helps!
