Briggs & Stratton 287702 No spark?

check it hasn't got points first. if it is and older machine it may have. as for rust thats a load of rubish. stop wire may be the cause try ignition switch. have you tried a new plug yet?

Hi Jim,
It sounds like you are having a coil problem. Before you go and replace it, there are a couple of things you can do to check it. Take the cover off the top of the engine to expose the coil and inspect it for rust. If it is rusty it could not be grounding properly. Clean it and reset the air gap to 10 thousandths of an inch. Use feeler guage. Second there is a small wire running from the coil, check to make sure it is not damaged and shorting out, this will kill your spark.
If this fails to get a spark take the coil off and get it tested. most lawn mower shops can do this for you for a small fee.
