Mend Toshiba TECRA 8000 Laptop Hdd

Toshiba Laptop TECRA 8000 - systems disk?

Hi. My elderly father's laptop HDD started to 'clunk' and he is unable to boot-up. it says (after much HDD noise) 'insert system disk'. He has no disk as it was 2nd hand. I've tried F8 to no avail. Any suggestions as to starting it up please? It has USB and i've got 1GB stick if there is a 'download'.Thanks.
