I've just stripped mine down to fix a squealing bearing and i think you're suffering from a broken belt.
Lay the machine on its front and take off the back plate. you'll have to take out the brace across the back and then you should be able to fit a new belt. I'd put mine back together before i saw your question so it might be a bit different as this is from memory.
