Mend Peugeot 206 Fault Going Year

Anti pollution fault on my Peugeot 206?

This fault is going to drive my insane!!! I have had it for over a year now and my peugeot garage is clearly clue less on how to fix it. Once the 'anti pollution fault' warning light comes on I will lose power and the car will often stop all together! I have taken the car to the garage now many times. I now have many new expensive parts fitted which I have stupidly paid for but the fault is still there!!! Please can any one offer any advice as I live in a rural area and having an un reliable car is a total nightmare!!!! Many thanks.

First time ever yesterday; had to jump it twice yesterday. It lives on a slight slope of a drive with the engine up so I can see down the car and thus down the drive (otherwise its big arse gets in the way!) and I've read this can be a cause... so that'll stop... never seen it before ever. Sparks were new at last service and it has been barely driven since - I've been unwell and hubby rarely uses it. 'Girly car' is his excuse. It had little fuel in it because when he does use it, he refuses to refill. Grr. So new rule, having read here, is to keep her above half full.
So, jumped her and kept her warm a little, then took her for a ride, she was happy in high and low gears, didn't lose any power and she started while out fine... hoping this problem doesn't come back as she was my dream car as a teen and hubby got me her as a present when I was well enough to drive again!
Will keep updated but he says apparently it's just crud on the sensors... not that I'm listening as she's my baby and he was in a soandso mood yesterday! :P

Had Same issue. I sprayed egr cleaner through the turbo and it sent it funny cos it wasnt being measured by the maf. This then threw up anti polution and oil pressure warning stop sign oil sign. I plugged an ecu reader off ebay in to read faults. Just one fault. Cleared it and that was it it was fine

The solution offered by Vertish is spot on. I have a 206 gti 180 and the cold seems to be the issue. Couple of dish cloths up the exhaust overnight and the fault has vanished

Hi all,

Drive a Peugoet 206cc year 2003. Antipollution and catalytic warnings coming up resulting in loss of power. Inserted a kitchen cloth into the exhaust every night and car runs fine. No parts needed and no mechanic costs insured. Cold weather conditions causes this problem.

Don't waste money taking it to the garage as I have this happen to my Honda hrv 2 years ago and today on my Peugeot 206cc . It is always worth trying this first and it will clean your petrol tank and jets out saving you fuel it increases engine performance reduces consumption and cleans injection system...magic formula Wynne's high performance petrol system treatment....it costs £13 ish in the UK don't go for the cheaper versions...pour it into petrol tank... (Just leave about a quarter of a tank in ...give it a run and only put about £15 fuel in so that it s more concentrate... Do it again in 3 months...also if you use the unleaded 97 instead of 95....it is more expensive but it has a cleaner in it...fingers crossed your engine light will go out

Firstly putting out your engine warning light with an OBD2 tester WILL NOT CURE THE FAULT
Engine warning lights indicate that you have had / having excessive harmful emissions. Nothing else
You could have a faulty sensor or the sensor is merely doing its job and you have a problem elsewhere
Cat / o2 sensors only give information to the ECU when they have reached operating temperature. If you are having bad tick over when the engine is cold it's nothing to do with those sensors

Its fine when first start up, then after about a minute, it starts missing etc, said cat fault, then anti pollution fault?

I have just had the same fault, the last few weeks I have been leaving the patrol go down low then putting around 15 litres in! I always used to use shell v power fuel but in the last few weeks just shells normal fuel as I'm skint! I will try the bp fuel and hopefully that works! The performance of the car is fine no change which is why I don't really want to take it the a garage as they will just tell I need this and that and it will ended costing more then the cars worth!

This fault an be very easily fixed. Just had it yesterday. Go to any garage, ask the mechanic to put your car on diagnostic and ask him to clear the error codes. Two minutes job! Once these errors are gone, your car will be the same like before the Antipollution Fault coming on! It's worth a try! Good luck!

Bought Peugeot 206 for GF a few years ago via AutoTrader and it has been a dream car for her. All has been fine until yesterday, when stuttering started - Anti-Pollution Fault appears for a few seconds and then the Yellow Engine light comes on.
I have read through all of the below answers and will be trying the following: First solution (a better quality of fuel as no PB station nearby) - 2nd solution (drive further away to test out the PB ULTIMATE FUEL) - 3rd solution (put kitchen paper in exhaust during cold weather, whilst parked up in order to stop condensation entering the exhaust system) - 4ht solution (buy an EMS lexia, (can be found on ebay) plug it in yourself and run the complete car scan. The car's ECU will tell the dongle exactly what's wrong.) 5th solution - (Take it to garage and get them to check coil pack and O2 sensor ) or see what the garage have to say as I am no mechanic !

I think that sort of sums up the solutions mentioned in this forum below. The general idea is - don't take your car to a dealer or garage until you have tried the cheap and free solutions first !

Good luck ! Lets hope "solution one" works first time !

What i did! Replace cat converter!!! If needed whole exhaust system , whole !!! And manifold . From a to z . Then, there is a leed from cat. I think its lambda sensor. Check ur intake and exhaust valves. Check ur air filter (pipes) also breather pipe. After all connect it pc and delete all faults!!! Reset it . And here you go !!!

(Im not sure i think lamba is o2 sensor, if its not the same then change 02 aswell)

I have just had this problem which I put down to poor fuel quality.
The performance is now ok but the warning light stayed on.
I reset the engine management system my turning the ignition key fully anticlockwise, this turned off the warning light.
It worked for me.

Hi there, same problem with my pug 206 1.4 16v, antipollution fault and cat converter fault, I wasn't in garage, I didn't bought anything, my brothers in love advice was, run car for 30 - 40 minutes on third up to fourth gear with high revs (4000 - 5000 per minute), switch off engine, wait 3 - 4 minutes start engine on and ... wooow, all warning lights gone, NO more cat converter fault, NO more antipollution fault and NO more orange engine warning light.
Cheapest way, it work but I don't know for how long.

Hi I had the same problem with my car and it went into safety mode and the cause was a container that holds fluid underneath at the back of the car that mixes with the fuel well mine was empty. After taking it to the garage to get filled My car has been fine since.

I was also having the same problems with Guddering, loss of power especially on motor way, anti - pollution fault. I used to fill up with asda petrol. read that a better grade of diesel (not from supermarkets) may help. Changed petrol stan...no more juddering or anti pollution fault.

Hi all. Had my Peugot 206 CC 2003 since Aug 2012. All fine until cold wet weather in December. Anti Pollution fault and Catalytic Converter fault. Car seems ok from cold start but if I return when its warm, it goes into idle mode where its lumpy, no power, no revs, wants to stall etc. I googled the fault and it seems no one really knows the answer but dont take the car to a garage as you'll pay a fortune. I did try the high grade fuel but to no avail. My husband first replaced the plugs, then bought a new lambda sensor (02 sensor) for the front section and then the back section, all to no avail. We are now going to try a new Coil Pack. I've spent ages reading all the forums and it seems the engine managment computer may need re-setting to clear the fault. Just thought this might be useful to someone out there with the same problems

I've just had this anti pollution fault come up last night- very frightening as lost power and engine was vibrating madly.
Not exactly assured by the mix of comments but all seem to be saying a similar thing. I have just filled up at my local Supermarket garage as I normally do.
Ive had my Peugeot for 3 years now. When I very first got it I soon realised that whenever I left it parked nose up on an incline, this generated the Catalytic Converter Fault and the Engine Shuddered. Sorted by moving to level ground, switching off and on.
Unfortunately, this didn't work last night.

I don't want or need a huge Garage bill, if you are in the SS7 area and Peugeot Mechanic would appreciate feedback.

OK, my car used to have this problem whenever it was cold weather. The anti pollution fault and cat fault actually was a random misfire. It actually didn't mean a new coil or spark plugs, it was due to a faulty air temperature sensor £10 from Ebay.

If you have a faulty air temp sensor it will cause your car to run lean or rich, which tells the sensors that the emissions are high giving you misleading warnings on the dash.

Hi mike again just had a crak wid a very good mechanic I was wrong in Sayin it was 02 sensor or the catalytic converter as mine are both fine it's the hydraulic tappets valve which sticks on these cars I was told to either change the oil and filter 5/40w do not use engine flush or if this doesn't make it any better in most cases the tappets / valve will have to be changed. I've cleaned throttle body and every sensor which mechanic assured me they wer fine don't take to peugeot you all know wot they charge

My 206 CC 2005 got this problem two weeks ago. It was the end of November, so very cold. It all started on the supermarket forecourt immediately after I had just filled up with my usual petrol. It kept misfiring. I eventually got it running and ignored the error message. I hardly use it, so I checked the handbook last night. It said to take it to a Peugeot dealer "rapidly". So I went to my usual dealer today. He says he can book it in for a "diagnostics test" costing £130! So I popped into Halfords and said that I thought there might have been lurgies in the petrol (It was the right unleaded petrol as I checked my receipt). He recommended Redex - a liquid which will cleanse the petrol pipes. All for way under a tenner. Judging by my Google search, the "Anti-pollution Fault" seems to be a generic term for "Error". The error can be anything. Cold weather, city diving, certain components. But some people have been driving with it on for years. I'm in no way experienced with cars, but I think it's a common occurance. I just need to find out how to get rid of it!

I'm going to try the kitchen roll, BP fuel as mine is stating anti pollution fault and yellow engine management light. I'll let you know out come. Then, I'll try discs from ebay to reset engine management from laptop to car. EMS dics, any advice on this? never used discs and lead from laptop to car but sounds like it'll save pounds....

There is no single cause for the anti-pollution fault, it can be caused by anything which effects the engines ability to operate at it's most effective. Could be just about anything.

BEST method is to by an EMS lexia, (can be found on ebay) plug it in yourself and run the complete car scan. The car's ECU will tell the dongle exactly what's wrong. I've had this error occur twice now from two completely separate issues. Fix problem, clear engine fault log with lexia, and no more anti-pollution error, engine problem light goes away.

it could have been water in the petrol tank which would answer the loss of power or the overheating this could have been due to old liquid being in the radiator. i have read some people have put a higher octane petrol in their cars this would help if water is in the tank. in winter dont let your car run low on fuel as you are asking for a build up of water/condensation in your tank. the anti pollution fault seems to be a common problem on pugs. i got the information off a time served mechanic who didnt charge me a penny for it. TRY THIS SAVE YOUR MONEY

I have a 55 plate 206 HDI sport which has just started this error today. Anti pollution fault with engine management light. It's in limp mode so no going over 30mph. I notice you all suggest it's in cold weather it happens but it's been 20c today. I do tend to run the tank to near empty regularly and only put a tenners worth of diesel in as I'm skint. Is it likely I have damaged my car by doing this?

I have just forked out £200 to have the Throttle Sensor replaced on my Peugeot 206 S (2004). I have had it 7 months and had nothing but trouble with it. I experienced a sudden loss of power in the fast lane on the motorway. Very frightening! After thinking it was fixed a week ago, the engine management light has illuminated. I haven't had any further loss of power (something that was happening once every few weeks before Throttle Sensor was fixed). I'm hoping it's just the system needs re-setting but got a horrible feeling i'm just going to be paying out more and more money. Maybe time for me to sell it and never look at a Peugeot 206 again!

Re**DO NOT fill up at TOTAL petrol stations, there petrol is diluted with WATER and this is a main contributor to the Anti-Pollution fault.
Try and AVOID cheap supermarket fuels - as again this is diluted with WATER and can also cause the Anti-Pollution fault.**

this is absolute rubbish , fuel cannot be diluted with water - this would amount to neglegence on the part of the fuel suppliers resulting in billions of dollars of damages claims .The most common fixes for this fault are
throttle body motor
lambda sensor (there are 2,up and down flow)
the BP fuel trick works with some-not all

I have the same problem with my 206cc every winter it seems to happen when the temperature stays around 0 degrees C to 8 degrees C and there is alot of moisture in the air. First year it did it I was pulling my hair out trying to get it sorted as it was a brand new car Peugeot where no help as when I had got to the dealers the car had warmed up and wasn't displaying the fault any more and they couldn't get it in their heads that it needed to be cold started to display now 5 years on the car still displays the fault every winter but I've found if you put kitchen roll inside the exhaust pipe whilst parked up at night and take it out before you start up it never happens it's only when I forget to do this of a night that it displays the warning when I start up, my dad thought it might be something to do with moisture build up in the exhaust because the heat off the exhaust pipe pulls in moisture from the air as it cools .... It's worked for me for the last few years and it's cost me nothing but a few rolls of kitchen roll.

Once it happened to me stayed for 2 days and went away.
The other time the fault came and stayed. I asked a lot of Peugeot expert to check it but nobody could solve that.
Finally one of them found that the problem is spark plugs.
the body of spark plugs were broken since they were not of recommended brands. he changed them all and the fault disappeared

Hey there guys! My GF also has this problem and it drives us crazy too. So what i get from all this conversations is that the best solution is to sell the car because it will never appear? I read sth about fuel up ultimate gas? really? might be a good thing if so... but my main question is what can happen in the worst case? can the engine brake down?

I had anti pollution fault come up, took it to a Peugeot specialist. The error came up as the flow switch open circuit from the ECU. Had the flow switch changed, i believe this to be the 02 sensor, and 2 months down the line the fault has come back but worse. The problems i get is that the engine wont go above 2200 revs.

Hi there, I too have now had this anti pollution fault coming up intermittently for the last month, but today on the drive to the garage for the first time I drastically lost power. In idle it felt like the car would stall and I was having to rev it up to 4 just to change gears. When i got there the problem miraculously stopped!. Plugged in computer device but because the fault was no longer there they could only reset the system. The mechanic has said it could be the coil pack, but as Im not seeing that mentioned here im wondering if it could be a red herring? Am concerned about just randomly replacing parts in the hopes it fixes it but am really worried this will happen again, any advice as to coil pack changes or the possibility that it could be spark plugs which was also mentioned would be great thankyou!

Hello, i too have this problem. my 206 xsi was stood for about 3 months before i bought it and now it keeps coming up with 'anti pollution fault' it . it rattles on start up and then on comes the fault, at worse, the throttle will not accelerate above 2.2k. i know when its about to happen as if i listen carefully, when i push the throttle a little click happens, when the little click happens its fine, even if the engine managment light is on, its when the throttle doesn't make that little click that it doesn't rev above 2.2k and when i drive it, it stays at 1k.
also, this may be coincidental but it happens about 2 days after i've put fuel in? i've had the diagnostic computer on it and gave the following fault codes p0704 and p3001 (i can't an answer to what the fault code p3001 is)
i'm thinking could it be either of the sensors on the throttle or on my mot an advisory of some thing to do with fumes leaking out the exhaust?? maybe the two are linked??
Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks

Ruby

most common thing on peugeot 206cc 02 reg anti pollution on dash also causes the yellow light on dash to come on,this being code po606 p0251,po242,they all read anti pollution due to the 02 sensors on the exughst, front and back ,and the thottle sensor, 2 sensors are £58 for both as you can use after market,on ebay, which causes your car to run terrible loss of power shaking and even stalling sometimes wont idle, all down to the cat,you can buy cat cleaner which does work and put in your tank every 3 months,,,,,,,,,do not take to main dealer, they rip you off big time i have worked on peugeots for 20 years hope this helps,:)))))

I have had the ANTI-POLUUTION FAULT on my peugeot 206cc many many times...

Some of the times the fault clears itself after around 7 days -- if the fault persists here is a surefire way to get rid of the fault.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Pop along to any BP garage and place £20 of BP ULTIMATE into your tank --- Within 24 hours the fault will disappear.. No costly bills at the garage and nothing to lose (as you still have the £20 of fuel in your car)
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

DO NOT fill up at TOTAL petrol stations, there petrol is diluted with WATER and this is a main contributor to the Anti-Pollution fault.
Try and AVOID cheap supermarket fuels - as again this is diluted with WATER and can also cause the Anti-Pollution fault.

£20 of BP ULTIMATE fixes the fault.
November 2010
lift the bonnet, disconnect the battery for bout 5seconds, reconnect, fault light still showing but engine management system lets engine run like normal, garage quoted me bout £900 to fix! not worth it. you do have to reset the clock tho!!

ROB
November 2010
The way to fix this is this:-

If at first the display reads convertor fault wait until it changes to anti-pollution fault. This can take a day or two.
Now that it reads anti-pollution fault wait until engine is warm and find a long straight bit of road.
get up to a bit of speed (check nowt behind you) and turn the engine off whilst in gear and rolling count to 5 and turn back on letting the car bump itself back to life.
8 out 10 times this will clean the fault first time if not just try again sooner or later it will clear the fault.
until the next time its cold, damp etc
DONT waste any money trying to fix it because its a waste of time and money.

Rob

i had this fault on my 02 gti it was due 2 a liitle hole in front of the front silencer so i would advice 2 jack the car up and check for holes in the entire exhaust system, if it aint that then it aint cost you a penny to do it, but if it has then it save a fortune replacing all other possibilities.

hi .nick again had a good look at the wifes car this morning. peugeot 206 .changed plugs old ones had long thread and new ones had short thread?anyway had found over 20 problems .on many sites last night assosiated with anti polution fault warning .flashing to do all would cost you thousands .so car was going like shite splutter, stall,no power, anti polution flashing. was going to change 02 sensor rang around for for price it seem to be most common problem $190 was cheapest so i thought id start with fuel bought 30ltrs optimax or highest octane you can get and a new petrol filter took it down to local auto electrician he reset the computer took him a few minutes he done it for free car now is running smoother than it ever is purring like a kitten so if yours does the same try this first before take it to a dealer$$$$$many of the sensors are very sensitive. good luck ps used to hate these cars always had v8 and rotorys but after driving the 206 i relised they are weapons when driven right they are very good 206 rally champ in 2002 go peugeots

Hi,
My 206gtihas the same fault! it seems to appear when the weather is really cold or damp then it mysteriously disappears for months.
When it appears my car feels quite juddery and sluggish.
Good to know from reading the previous posts that this seems like a common fault!
First frosty morning today and daa-rah there's the anti-pollution fault appeared! no brainer!!

I am having the same problems on my 2005 206 sports. display shows anti pollution fault, car loses power and usually works ok when reved and engine heating up. I have taken the car to a local garage who have changed 02 sensors and car still playing up they also said they suspected that it could be the ecu unit which was at fault! am now having to take vehicle to local peugeot garage which will be extremly expensive!?

I have had the same problem with my 206cc. It is driving me mad. I have had it to the local garage as Peugeot garage is Ford/Peugoet/Seat/ and lots of other makes so it has a very bad reputation locally. The recommended garage put it on the computer and said it was the throtal position sensor. But guess what it has come back again. I am going to have the o2 sensor done now and see.. Has anybody any advise!!!

the " post " cat o2 sensor should not fluctuate, if it is then i would suspect a faulty cat.
the " pre " cat o2 sensor will fluctuate as the mixture is richened and leaned off

this believe it or not is a common problem on peugeot 206, the 1st and cheapest way to get it sorted is by replacing the o2 sensors on the exhaust they are roughly £50 a shot!! expensive if it doesn't work but the next option is a cat which runs into hundreds of pounds. a good garage will be able to read the live data of a vehicle with a computer that plugs into your ecu, the o2 sensor readings must fluctuate quite rapidly whilst the engine is running if they don't seem to be doing this then they are damaged or need replacing/cleaning.
i had this problem for many months and it really is annoying and at a great cost to me found it to be the cat in the end!!

This would appear to be an Oxygen Sensor fault, which any good garage with a diagnostic computer should be able to fix. Shouldn't cost more than £60-£65. Good Luck with it.

Hello,
I've had my 206gti 2002 since April 2003. I get the anti pollution fault every winter. It seems to get worse when the weather goes from extreme cold to cold and damp!! I've had it in the garage for repair several times but to no avail. I keep running it daily for work and then by chance the fault goes off. When the fault appears it just drives a little sluggish. It has just appeared on screen once again 31.10.08. I was gutted as it was running so well at the start of this winter. No problems through the summer either. Hope this bit of info helps...
