is there a way around having to buy a new printer when the ink pads are 'fu?

I bought an Epson C46 printer which has given great service up to now................Iam getting a message saying the ink pads are full, and this cannot be rectified other than exchanging the machine for another 'reconditioned' one from Epson! Extra expense and bother for WHAT reason??? surely these pads can be cleaned? And if not, WHY doesnt the manufacturer make this clear at the outset??
Seems like a cynical built in 'con' to me! I will NEVER buy Epson again, much as I liked the printer.
