how to remove ignition housing on E38 bmw 1994 740?

the housing is attached to the steering column with a rubber seal, and I can't see a way of removing it. Steering wheel is off, everything is disconnected, the housing appears to be only held now by this seal, within which the column turns, but it won't come off - very frustrating!!
