Why am I disconnected from the internet every 5-10 mins?

Hi guys, I have a netgear DG834G v3 router and I use an ethernet connection to my computer. I'm currently using tiscali broadband with a speed of roughly 8mb (more like 6-7).

So basically i am able to browse the web absolutely fine and care-free, but when it comes to things such as skype, BBC iplayer or online games (I play WoW) I find that i am constantly getting disconnected every 5-10 mins. Then, about 30 seconds after, my router reconnects and then the cycle repeats. For instance, on skype the call would be dropped, on BBC iplayer it would stop streaming and stop playing the video and on WoW i would get disconnected from the server. Then after 30 seconds or so i can recall the person on skype, log back into WoW or watch the video (after closing and opening it again).

Another thing is that immediately after I get disconnected, if i try and open up the internet browser, it will say "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". After around 30 seconds it works again.

There is no warning of this when it happens; no error messages, no pop up warnings, and no strange lights on the router - they always stay green. In fact it even says on the connection status panel that I am still connected. I have installed the latest drivers for my router and network card (I think) and I've done alot of messing around with the settings but all to no avail :(

I also have a USB modem (Sagem 800 E2T) which i have tried using and exactly the same thing happens. However this doesn't recconect like my router does and when I look on the connection status panel I have noticed that I am sending packets but not recieving any. (still says I am connected though). Another thing is that I have to manually disconnect and reconnect with this wheras the router does it automatically.

Sooo if you've managed to read all that you can give youself a pat on the back then tell me how to sort it out :D

p.s. Some details on my network card...

Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection

Driver Provider: Intel
Driver Date: 06/12/2007
Driver Version:8.0.47.0
Digital Signer:Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher

And router info....

Type: NETGEAR DG834G v3
Firmware version: V4.01.37
ADSL Firmware Version 7.03.01.66
Network Type: PPPoA

Thanks.

Hi
the cable from the router to computer could just be a bad fit, do you know anyone with a cable for you to give it a try. My laptop was dropped and this connection was damaged. new cable worked. give it a try.

Couldn't it just be that an internet service provider disconnects you when you use up too much bandwidth a clause lister as their fair use policy... or whenever i.s.p. servers are being put under too much strain they group disconnect people. I have the same thing happening with BT whether I use my mac or pc. I don't believe it's equipment related.

Seen as you are having the same proboem with the usb modem and the router and in most cases there isnt a problem with your phone wires as long as your not a cut em up and mess around with them type of person, Then i suggest there could be a problem on your computer..

You should try scanning your computer for spyware / adware /malware and even virus infections as these regulary can cause comunication problems with the internet.

Next thing is anti virus software like Norton or Mcaffee, When these are not correctley configured which i have seen in hundreds on complaints on my own customers, this causes internet problems with regards to connecting to websites and using messenger services. It may be worth trying uninstalling these softwares and try your computer direct to the internet without protection to see if this cures the problem, Antivirus software and firewalls can be re added later.

Another thing that might be a giveaway to the problem is things that load up when you turn your computer on. Do you get popups or warnings saying your computer is infected with various malwares? this is also a big giveaway to adware infections.

big programs to remove spyware include Spybot and AdAware , both are free, do a google search for them.

All failing that, call Tiscali and request a detailed line check and also ask Bt for one too, as there may be a problem between the pole and your house, i have sen this too after house works on the gutters has been performed, and bt replaced the outside line resulting in a perfect connection.

Cheers

Have you looked at the settings on the router?
Usually they have a setting for always being connected or only triggered by traffic.
If it's triggered by traffic then it will go off when your computer doesn't talk to the router for a while. When your browing the web it is always talking to the router and internet, so it will stay on.
Hope this helps.

Sorry for such a short answer to such a long question.

First try running your router from the Test Socket that you find under the faceplate of your BT Master Socket. If the problem goes away then you have an internal wiring fault. If that is the case put a NEW question here for how to ficx it.

If the problem remains, you need to call Tiscali.

BTW you are on an 'Up To' 8 Mb/s service not an 8 Mb/s service.
