Mend Ford Escort Engine Driving Clutch

my ford escort is revving up on its own?

i have a ford escort and when i'm driving it is pulling itself without me touching the accelerator and when i press the clutch in the revvs go up to 4000, can anyone tell me what might be wrong? many thanks
