Mend HP iGo 2000 Starts Boot Screen

HP IGO 2000 STARTS BOOT UP THEN BLANK SCREEN?

Hi there, My daughters HP iGo2000 laptop starts boot up sequence gets to screen prompting options to start in safe mode - last config etc. Then proceeds to start in Windows xp screen but stalls to blank screen - I am thinking HDD broken.
Can I replace a 2.5 HDD ATA 5 with a ATA 100?

Unfortunately I get so far into the start up Windows XP logo and the screen goes blank. Thats as far as I can go in Normal or last known mode - in safe mode I get a long list of drivers and nothing else

try pressing f8 just after post count.
then select normal mode. if no joy then restart & repeat part 1 again only this time select safe mode & when it comes to login.
logon as administrator it will ask you if you wish to system restore select no.
that should activate sys res. just select an earlier time.
