why does the clutch on my transit feel soft?

why does my transit van clutch feel soft and i have to let the clutch out before i can change gear. it is a 53 plate 2000cc diesel turbo thank you.

cause its on its way out! i have 2001 2.0 TD mine has just gone to have it fixed is proving to be difficult! prices range from £400-£600, also struggle to find a garage which will be able to lift it, and work next day!!!
