When you say you are getting power from an electrical outlet right below the new switch, do you mean that you are taking a live feed from a socket? Remember that sockets and lights are on separate circuits protected by miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) with two totally different ratings - the socket would typically be 20 A and the lights 10 A. Also the sockets are supposed to be protected by a Residual Current Device (RCD), the lights aren't. Light fittings and switches must be provided with earths - even if the switch faceplate or light fitting itself is plastic. (Above applies to UK and Ireland!). You would be better off and safer getting a qualified electrician.
