how to replace faulty gas hob ignition switch whirlpool?

Hi, My gas hob ignition was not working, so I ordered another one, but when I removed the faulty one and put the new one on its still doesn't work. Help very much appreciated.

We've just followed the advice to prise up the ignition knob a little and would like to thank Steve and the others on here for their advice. It has saved us trying to find and buy a thermo-dodar whatever and obviously cash. Thank you thank you. Very useful.

The switch costs £25 quid it's self so he got £20 quid profit! Nothing in my eyes would have charged £65

Thank you Thank you Thank you - took about 4 seconds once I had read your advice and I now have a 5 working gas burner hob (instead of 4 working 1 not). I have even been back into IKEA and asked about this and they just told me to contact Whirlpool direct.... wish I had googled this about 2 1/2 years ago when I installed the hob!!!

Hi all,
Well our Whirlpool hob has been playing up for quite a while now (read years!) and I've finally got round to having a look. A quick google got me here and in less than a minute after levering up the knobs as Eleanor describes all hobs are working again.
As my wife said, why didn't you do this 2 years ago.... well I'm only a man after all:-)

Re the five burner Whirlpool gas hob. We have the same hob. I'll assume it's the sort with the ignition switch built into each gas knob.

IE, turn on the knob, press to ignite, hold for a second or two and release. The flame is supposed to stay lit...but doesn't...

The solution. Prise up the offending knob a few mm, as if you're trying to remove the knob.

What happened? The knob has been pressed down too far and is interfering with the thermocouple action. These are the spikes next to each ring that sense if the flame is lit - it's part of the safety feature.

If this doesn't work then it's likely the thermocouple itself has failed.

I have a five burner whirlpool gas hob. The middle big burner lights up but fails to stay on even after ignition switch is held for few minutes. Can anyone help?

great news folks-here is the answer as discovered by my son in law who is a wiz at electrics-but lives hundreds of miles from me.however as a favour he came over & fixed for me,this is because a gas engr quote was 'oh-anything from £30 to £45 or more depending how long it takes' !!! how long did it take? 2 minutes-yes thats what i said 2 minutes. all you do is switch off the electric supply to the ignition switch (usually in the cupboard or behind the drawer immediatley under the hob), then remove the old ignition switch from the hob - just lifts out whole. underneath the switch is the wiring, this simply unplugs from the switch & replace with new ignition switch. hey presto job done!! £45 indeed!!! what do these gas/electrical engineers think they are doing trying to pull the wool over peoples eyes? hope this is of help to anyone else with a faulty ignition switch.
