Mend Epson ER-420M

Till roll not printing properly?

We have a ER-420M in our charity shop. Recently the printing on the till rolls has been getting fainter and hard to read. Left hand side of printout is okish but right hand side is very faint which makes end of day accounting difficult. I have changed till roll several times with no effect. As the rolls are thermal paper presumably there is a heating element. How can we repair this. Any ideas?
