Fixing the zig-zag on Kenmore 385.17928?

Have a Sears Kenmore 385.17928. The zig zag is not working. the needle with go to the right and left, can see the stitches on the fabric. when taken off the machine the stitches will be straight stitch and very louse. Please advise, thank you, Denise
