The sounder will always ring when opened wether it is in engineers mode or not, because of the tamper feature, however there should be inside the sounder a series of metal prongs with numbers next to them the shortest normally being around 5 seconds simply short these pins out and the sounder will fall silent. thus enabling you to change the sounder without upsetting the neighbours to much, please bear in mind when installing the new sounder that they are only allowed to sound for a maximum of 20 minutes at a time,whilst there are no regulations for the strobe light, once the sounder is changed simply enter your code as if you were setting the alarm and then re enter the tamper light will go out and then will be ready to use please note when doing this the control panel should be in engineers mode.
