your fuel pump is probably going to spoil. or theres a leak somewhere in the fuel line. if it starts well when tank is full,then i'm right. its not cheap getting it fix. i would suggest u keep your fuel tank full,if u want to delay any repairwork. good luck.

Well it should start without heater plugs as its a direct injection but the plug light shouldnt stay on for 20 secs? I might start by checking the plug relay is giving the plugs 12v for a good time when you turn it on. Otherwise what fuel are you running it on? are the compressions ok? Does the starter turn the engine over quick enough?
