I have a 1992 passat, there is a bonnet release leaver in the driver foot well. (It is black) pull this and the bonnet raises, put your fingers under the bonnet and push the metal tab down. Lift the hood and have a look inside!!

i have a 2000 passat. if it's the same as that, you pull the red handle in the drivers footwell, then a little plastic tab shoots out from unde the bonnet at the front. pull this and the bonnet will raise itself.

You have a bonnet release lever in either the passenger or drivers footwell, look in the handbook, will tell you in there.
