Mend Maytag LAT9806GGE Washing Machine Sensor Fill

MAYTAG LAT9806GGE?

Can anyone tell me if you MUST fill via the inlets, or is it possible to fill through the top of the drum with a hosepipe? I am trying to use the machine away from the house and cannot easily plumb it in. Is there some sort of a sensor in the inlet which may prevent the machine operating when no water has passed through? I have tried filling manually but the wash cycle doesn't seem to want to operate, although it will pump and spin with no problem.

I can now tell you that the Maytag Customer Service via email, has been fantastic! (NAR_Maytag_CustomerExperience@Maytag.com). All my questions have been answered and they even sent me a users' guide within 30 minutes of my email asking for one. Beat that.
