Mend Hitachi Help Drive Working

Help ! IBM 600e, cannot find Hard drive?

I have a 600e, was working 100%, changed HD (2!, Tosh30gb and Hitachi 40gb).. NOW, cannot see HD, (either) Press F1, switch On, Easy-Start, Test All, all Ok... Boots ok from floppy, type C:\, then DIR, ent, C: drive shows no files although I Fdisk and formatted it on another machine, and copied the SYS and files on it, and checked it for working... Booted Hitachi's Drive test from floppy (ver 4.07, 25/5/06) shows size okay, BUT name, POSHIBA, MODEL IK302ICAS,,, when same test done on another machine, TOSHIBA, MODEL MK3021GAS,,, WHAT DON'T I KNOW ?,, I have also a 600 (266mcs) and it does everything (as above) the same !!!!.... (did update bios on the 600e)... Wonder if you can help PLEASE (grovel)...

Thank you for quick reply, sorry about the shorthand...

Ref HDs,
One is Toshiba MK3021GAS (30gb)
The other Hitachi HTS541040G9AT00 (40gb)
Both can be 'fdisk', all C: or partioned, and install OS from CD or DOS prompt when put in 2 other laptops I have. Also they give correct NAME etc when tested with 'HITACHI DRIVE TEST'.

Now to problem with '600e'... It was working 100% with all 30gb as C: but I wanted 5gb partions so I used 'fdisk', and formatted all partitions.

I then tried to install '98se', when it got to the 'scandisk' part of install it started finding errors,,, fat etc, to which I clicked 'Fix it' to all errors (it found errors in all partitions) and stopped the install at end of scandisk.

I then ran HITACHI DRIVE TEST (bootable floppy) and it reported the drive as 'POSHIBA IK3021CAS 30gb', ran both 'Quick' and 'Advanced' tests which passed OK.

(I also have a 600 266mcs, put the drive in it and it has all the same problems above)

Both computers have shown 'OK' in all tests in IBMs Easy-Setup.

Since your reply I have run 'Low Level Format' in IBMs Easy-Setup. Set to boot from CD, tried to install Windoze ME, same result, scandisk finds errors and install stops.

I am used to computers with normal cmos setup, not this IBM Easy-setup, have downloaded user manuals but the make very little reference to Easy-Setup.

Sorry for long winded question (took me long time to type, one finger)

Regards, THICKO..........

It is really difficult to read your problem because (Forgive me but it is the truth.) the written English that you have used is not very good. If you repost please use some sentences and paragraphs, then your post will be moire understandable.

Did you change the Hard Drive or fit a second one? It isn't clear.

Assuming the former, when you installed the drive did you then try to install and Operating System properly? Just copying a few files across won't do it.

The proper way to do this is install the new drive. Go to the BIOS and set the CD drive as the boot drive. Boot from a CD containing an OS e.g. Windows. The installation procedure will no do all of the Fdisk, Format, install Bootstrap loader, etc for you.
