Big hammer and knock seven bells of s--t out of it,it won't fix it,but it'll make you feel a whole lot better.

i have a 2000 2.5 di i have changed oil and added cleaner done relevant service items im inclined to look at e.g.r valve,as my 2.5 discovery had similar problems fitted de cat kit which involves removing e.g.r and fitting different inter cooler pipe.it sailed through the emissions this year as other years it took cleaner etc.well its worth a try.

almost sure it will be the egr valve take it off and make a blank up for it and you will get more power again the other thing ive had is the link from the pump to throtle buterfly brake (on 190 models)

it coud be the pump but i would be inclined to check the air filter and injectors

sound to me like you have a injection pump problem but have the 4 injectors serviced to elimanate them

Black smoke is too much fuel/too little air in combustion. So you start with as the other man said, air filter, also make sure you have no restriction in intake before filter. Go on to tappets.
Depending on your transit, you may have a clogged intake (banana shaped going across rocker cover), turbo or EGR problems. Then you are into fuel injection problems, these really needs a garage. You might start with timing or injectors and end up with the pump itself

Have you checked or changed the air filter?
