just bought mountfield lawnmower and when i put petrol and oil in and turned it on it start smoking within minutes and there is queit a strong smell of burning engine. says in instructions about pressing "primer button" where can i find this button and what should it look like cos i cant seem to find where it is. mountfield HP 474 model.
My Mountfield smoked the first time too - but not since. It's paint on the exhaust burning off.

Yes, mine doesnt have a primer but for the first 10 mins it smoked constantly but then after that it stopped and hasnt since

I can concur with Maria. there is no primer. Also the grass box is rubbish. It can't take any weight - the canvas bit keeps coming out of the plastic top bit and it seems to warp and that is only after having mowed 10 yards! Does anyone know if a hard box version is available?

LOOK ON THE SIDE OF THE CARBURETTOR THERE IS USUALLY A PRIMER BUTTON THERE COLOURED RED PRESS THIS A COUPLE OF TIMES TO PUT FUEL INTO THE CARB THEN START THE ENGINE THE SMOKE MAY BE FROM IT SITTING IDLE AND OIL DRIPPING INTO THE BORE MY CAR DOES THIS IF ITS BEEN SITTING FOR A DAY OR TWO BUT IT DOES NOT BURN OIL AND PASSES ITS MOT EMISSION TEST OKAY

The primer button should be near fueal tank or carb ...its just for helping start the mower thou ....make sure oil level is correct
