drivers window not working in my 2004 renault megane?

i have found this great little module replacement on ebay and it is a fantastic piece of kit.
it is half the size of the original module and seems totally waterproof.
it got my windows on my mark 2 renault megane working again.

I have a Megane CC which I bought 6 weeks ago, it had just had rear drivers side windows fixed at the garage I bought it from, before I bought it. Then the rear passenger window packed in 2 days after I bought it. Got that fixed, then the CD player ate one of my discs had to prise it out with a screwdriver. Then the heater fan controller stopped working on 4 setting, but then suddenly started working again the next day. Now after washing my car yesterday, the passenger window has been acting erratically, you lower it and it starts rising inch by inch on it's own. Then it wouldn't go down at all using the door switches but did using the switch for lowering all 4 windows simultaneously. Anybody know what connection has got wet to cause this problem? I've had the speaker out and felt the motor connections, they feel slightly damp. I took the connections out which go from the door to the door frame on both doors. There were slight signs of corrosion on both. So sprayed WD40 but it is still playing up. I've had a look at the door switches, they look fine. I've checked the fuses they are okay, so what can it be?

Common design problem with megane and scenic. If any window fails its usually due to water contamination.If you continue to mess around with it, with the power still connected you will do more harm than good.The best thing you can do is to remove the fuse until you get chance to gain access to the motor and control module. At this point dry it out with a hairdryer and cover it with polythene to make it as water resistant as possible. Dont be too concerned if it does not work right away I've known these things to take several days to dry out properly. If it is not working again after a few days it looks like the control unit will need replacing

Tried it before and ended up totally damaging everything in sight.
It was not worth the hassle.
So bought ebay item number 321044803957 and now everything is working better than ever.The unit was so simple to fit.The seller was fantastic and when i called him was able to point me in the right direction to get the door panel off.
I could not speak more highly of him.

Drivers window stopped working over 12 months ago on my daughters 2005 Megan. I finally got round to looking at it today and realised the fault was in the black box that sits between the multipin plug and the motor. I unclipped the box from the side of the motor and swapped it with the one on the passenger side so now at least the drivers window works fine.

My drivers side front window stopped working last week. Luckily in the up position! Have just called Renault (0800 072 3372) after reading previous posts. They now have a special IVR message on their phone lines directing you to your local Renault dealer to discuss the fault and prices.

Renault now only cover 62% of the cost and the dealer have to make sure it is actually the window regulator that is faulty before they will order a new one. The customer cost is approx £130.

I have sourced a new regulator from Ebay for £30 and my boyf will fit for me. Refuse to pay £130 for a know fault.

I have same problem with drivers window. mine was fixed 16 months ago at a cost of £60 only to work for a couple of days before it packed in again. researched problem last night and today fixed window in an hour.

There is a small green reset button that is at the end of the rotor motor, its in the wire connector 3rd from the left, press it all the way down right into the wireing block, your window will work and save you 300 pounds, you can accsess it through the speaker, if not take the front facia of the door off. It looks like a tiney green Tic Tac. Worked for me.

I've got an 05 plate megane 5 door and the front passenger window went down on it's own whilst I was in work and wouldn't got back up. I took the pocket (with the lid) off the door panel, wiggled the wires and heard a clicking noise. The window went back up but the clicking continued so i pulled the two 25a fuses and one 40a fuse out of the fuse box. Obviously there is now no power going to the windows but at least they are in the up position :-)

i got a so called new black box regulator off e-bay, it didn't
work right off the buttons and then after a couple of days
tried to set the door panel on fire, very shoddy. AVOID ANY SELLERS WITH NEGATIVE FEEDBACK.

Had the same problem on passenger side window locked shut , a quick fix that worked for me was to remove the door lidded pocket by means of one plastic clip on the near side , where then you can see the black control module , I just gave it a wiggle and it worked ?? . Have to do a more permanent fix in the future though.

I was asked to look at a renault megane osf glass yesterday which had stopped working on an 06 plate. Having first established it was not the switch, I removed the door card which the motor assembly is fastened to. I noticed immediately water on the assembly and where the wire harness entered the motor, the foam and insulation tape protection was completely soaked. I removed the connector dried it off and renewed the insulation tape checking the wires were well sealed. I reconnected, and the glass worked fine. I noticed on some of these comments that the problem started when it was raining. I think it is possible that water, shorting the electrical connections, may be a cause.

i had the same problem when my window just stopped working one day.i checked around the breakers yards with no luck.then checked ebay and purchased a motor repair kit(item number 220875838340).when it arrived i phoned the person selling the new part and he could not have been more helpful.he was able to tell me where every screw was in the door panel and exactly how to fit the unit(not that it was hard anyway).he saved me a fortune.

my drivers window regulator module packed up and i found a bloke on the internet who repairs them and gaurantees his work.problem is it worked for acouple of times then packed up now he refuses to refund my money £38 and ignores my calls i spent a fortune with renault who told me the module is still faulty. I got ripped off and he doesnt care the man i went to is in cleveland m.james pro-lux electronics pentland ave, never again!!!!!

to remonve the door card there are torx screws around the bottom one in the handle to pull the door and one in the handle to open the door then carefully get a screwdriver behind the panel and mine had loads of gunk on it to seal it break the seal of the gunk all the way round, then remove the inner window seal around the bottom. you will then be able to carfully pull the door card away a little and halfway down at the top off the pocket on the door card there is a clip get a long screwdriver and and ease it off. now your in you will see a black honeycomb plastic bit remove the screws and get you screwdriver behind it and get the clips out remove the cable for the door opening from the black piece not the actual lock. you then remove the 10mm nuts to remove the motor disconnect the wire 2 10mm bolts to remove the runner and slide it out with the window up.

JOB DONE!

Failed part is the little electronic control module that is fixed to the motor of the window regulator with a couple of small screws. Bad news is you have to replace the whole unit - regulator(pulleys, frame etc) + motor + the faulty module, as the module is not available on its own. Even worse news now, the modules are made in Japan & supplies to Renault have dried up. Therefore your fault has to be logged & you will be called back to dealer when parts are available again. When?? 12 Volt supply across the motor after removing the module will shut any window that is stuck in the open position - had this happen during the cold spell in the winter - not easy to get panel off so be careful. Now on 4th failed module - 1 of which is only 2 yrs old.

i have a 54 plate megane, i must be on my 6th replacement window regulator now, the last failure being about 6 months outside the warrantee period. I complained to head office but was only offered a slight discount of repairs cost, about £20 off. So I wrote to the MD of Renault UK with all my documentary evidence of the repeated failures, claiming that there was clearly a design fault and the components were not fit for purpose. I wrote that if they did not reimburse me with the full cost of £340 repair, I would take them to the small claims court and would never buy another Renault again. A cheque for the full amount arrived two days later!!

My 07 Megane GT drivers window faulty plus.....?

My cars drivers window decided to stay down today too!! I had no idea there was an inherent problem so I checked the control buttons and pulled them away from the arm rest and swapped the switches over (the front with the backs) and found it was not a switch problem
I then messed with the fuses (yes clutching at straws by now) and tried again and the window went up! On the way home I stupidly lowered it a couple of inches to get some air and it won't go up again so I can't set the alarm! I've also noticed that the remaining 3 windows now open close a couple of inches at a time each time the button is pressed. I'm assuming the control mechanism (presumably the regulator if that's the correct name?) is failing. I thought this would be a small cpu which would organise lowering all at once or a bit at a time and if not I'm not surprised there is so much hassle with this!
I am going to tape the gap in the open window so I can use the alarm and I'm going to give Renault hell when I speak to them no matter how polite they are! I'm not surprised they are being very courteous and asking for 25% of the costs when clearly they should be recalling the lot and modifying accordingly!
This is a disgrace and I suggest everyone no matter if it has been fixed (probably only temporarily anyway) or not should contact people like trading standards, motoring programmes like Top Gear etc. and maybe something can be done.
I would have thought as mine was one of the last to be made any niggles would have been sorted by now.
If Renault do mine I will be suggesting sealing the offending items with silicone gel or similar and a packet of silica inside to soak up any future condensation that may occur. I will provide those items if they won't.

My renault megane had a faulty window regulator which was repaired by a main dealer at a cost of £300 around two years ago. It is a 54 plate. Will i be able to claim any costs given that it is now a known issue

I have no answer, I just need to vent! I have a 54 plate megane, and i have lost count of the times my front windows have failed over the past 5 years, and get told "it's just one of those things". Always out of warranty - they know they will fail after 12 months but give you the 12 months anyway. I only found out last year that i could have a discount on replacing them as it is a common fault. Only found out as i made a fuss on how much it was costing me every 18 months! Why can they not tell you straight off? Why can they just not make parts that do not fail?? Surely it is not a hard job? Why should I have to pay fullprice on a problem which has not been caused by me????? I have been told by my dealer that my car has been in more than other megane in the area! Clutch issues - not going back up once your foot has left it, making car slightly un-driveable! Perstant failing, could whist driving hook foot under pedal to relase it, to start with, then full failure before having it booked in, with the nice dealer only warning light! asked if this was yet another "problem" and told that yes, this happens a lot too - and yes hefty price tag to boot My car has turned into a lemon. Anyone had problems with the stearing wheel and air bag? This is the next money pit, 4 seperate faults, not including wiring or warning lights! Still road legal, just missing the security that if i have an accident, i have nothing there to protect me! I suspect renault are rubbing their hands in glee at the possible charges!!

Having already had 3 regulators replaced on my 54 Scenic, I have recently been having intermittant problems with the rear driver's side window which now and then decides to open itself unexpectedly, like it did yesterday when there was a heavy rain shower.It did, however,eventually close on its own about an hour later!Usually clicking the buttons on the key fob a few times seems to sort it out but having to drive home on a cold evening with my window down and a wet back seat was the last straw.

Thinking it was an electrical fault,I took it to an auto electrical place today which said the control unit was on its way out but that the whole regulator would have to be replaced.
Having seen people's comments on this site about Renault contributing 75%, I rang the Renault Customer Services number but didn't need to speak to anybody!This problem must be so common that, under the complaints option, they now have a dedicated option for Scenic/Magane electric windows complaints which tells you to contact the Renault Dealer direct and, if your car is less than 7 years old and has done less than 100k miles you can have it fixed for the bargain price of approx £100!
Because the window is so unreliable and I don't want to risk any possible car insurance claim being invalidated due to the window being "left open" it is now booked in to be looked at on Thursday.Don't see why we should have to pay anything at all!

Went to our 56 reg Megane on Sunday and the rear driver side window was down.

Missus was insistent the window had been forced down but there was no evidence of an attempt to break in.

Thanks to this thread I dropped the car off in Park Royal earlier and will pick it up tomorrow.

Pretty fortunate that nobody had a nosey in the car. The window was open for well over 24 hours!

I'm in for replacement today, this is my second regulator replacement, the first one I paid for not realising that Renault would pay 75% of the cost. First the driver's side, now the offside front.
Regularly have water in the offside front pocket. Leaky seals I suspect, I will raise this when I am there.

Have a 04 megane and both front window regulators have been replaced. Front nearside went again last week. After reading this forum we contacted Renault customer services to register our displeasure with the problem. They have agreed to cover 75% of the repair ( being done today 01/02/11 at a cost of £80) they also told us this arrangement has been around since May 2010 for cars under 7 years old & less than 100.000 miles. Thanks to everyone who posted on this site, a lot of money saved.

Renault!!??! This will be my first and last time that I ever purchase a French car! I have had my 56 plate megane for 4 years, and it has been back into the dealership 17 times!! (14 times for various window faults, 3 times for faulty stereo). Now, each time the fault rears it's ugly head again (usually every 8 weeks), I have to fork out 25% of the cost for renault to fix it. They must be laughing all the way to the cash desk!! GRRRRRR!! We have also had electrical problems with our Citreon, so PLEASE stay away from French motors!

Thanks to this I've just had both front regulators replaced on my 03 (2004) Megane at a cost of £122 for both after Renault contribution of 75%. My 7 years expired the day of the repair too :) both windows are now working perfectly and now have a further 1 year guarantee to boot. Special Mention to Laura Webber the Customer Support Manager for Renault UK who dealt with my "case" and to Arnold Clark Renault in Wigan who carried out the works.

Our Megane also had window problems. I called the Customer Service Centre who were very helpful indeed. They acknowledged this was a known problem and offered to pay 75% of the cost (estimated to be £400). They also called the local dealership while I was waiting and transferred me to them. The person I spoke to (Tony Rees) is a good ambassador for Renault

Just happened again to our Scenic 54 plate. ( First time for this car but also happeed on a previous Scenic we had but was repaired under warranty ) I did as everyone else and phone the 08000 number and they were very helpful and organised for car to go in today. Just had call back to say its the regulator and will cost me about £83 (25% of total cost ) I agree with others that if its happening to so many people then the fault is either with the components or design of the windows/door which allows the water to get in. I'm pleased Renault have been so helpful, but annoyed I have to fork out over £80 and travel about on the bus. Just pray the other side doesn't go.

I have an 07 renault megane 3 door. Had it 2 years and have had to have the drivers window fixed twice. Luckily that was under warantee.

I was disappointed when for the third time my window stuck open again, having to drive round in the cold and rain and park with the window open has been a nightmare.
Rang one renault garage who said it would cost near 300 pounds to fix.
Luckily i remembered this site and today i rang renault and they are paying 75%. This is good but to be honest i dont see why i should pay anything for an obvious fault that is theirs.

Anyone got any ideas. My 53 plate Megane has a fault window reg. Phoned Renault customer service in May (ish) time. told the regs only had 5 year warranty and therefore nothing they could do. I brought a non genuine renault reg and fitted it myself (binned the old one) that is now faulty after 3 months (will be contacting the supplier)
however.....it now appears renault have changed there warranty to 7 years which my car has just fallen into and they will fix it by contributing 75% of the cost. Correct me if i am wrong but i guess renault will tell me I have voided the warranty??? my argument is that there was NO warranty on that part when i chose to replace it myself. Do I have any rights or any leg to stand on with this?

Thanks everyone for all the good advice. I have a 2005 megane. My passenger door window stopped working (luckily closed), then started working again after a few weeks, then stuck open ! The symptoms made me think 'regulator' so I tried the various sequences & it didn't budge. About to give up, I removed the speaker & slid my hand through the hole & felt down to the bottom of the motor, finding the connecting block & giving it a wiggle.......hey presto the window now works. It seems like a bad connection, and I'm not sure it it's a permanent fix, but worth a try if you are stuck for ideas !

Call Renault on 0800 072 3372 and explain issue to them. I called and was pleasantly surprised by the professional and helpful advice. They ended up recognising issue and contributed 75% of cost of repair! All very good and yes this kind of service will add to brand loyalty for Renault.

Hi everyone.

I have had the same issue but originally bought a used 53 plate megane. Had it for a year (thats how long the warranty was) and in the year took it back 6 TIMES for window issues. Landed up upgrading to the 07 plate to get away from the window issues and guess what, have had the 2 of the 07 windows fixed and now that my warranty ran out in March have a 3rd one that Renault have said they will only cover 75% of !! I mean seriously why are we having to pay for their design fault.

just finished stripping the passenger door AGAIN .i was offered 75% off having the regulator fixed but that still worked out at 80 odd quid for me to pay for a problem inherant with renault .. if they fixed the water problem that causes the regulator to fail then that would be the end of it!! grease, cling film and an inner plastic sheet have been added by myself so lets see if that fixes it.. grrrrrr

we took the door apart today and checked the cause of the water in the door pocket. when a watering can was poured over the window it flooded inside of the door at both end of the exterior rubber seal. The seal can be easily lifted out and it looks as though the fit is terrible and there are gaps at each end where water comes in. Has anybody tried to replace the seal with a better fitting one to prevent any water coming in in the first place?

They told me they cover 75% Of the cost - the cost inclusive of labour being approximately £50 after discount.

This is for some models especially meganes under 7 years old and under 100,000 miles.

You have to ring Renault customer services who will deal with the local Renault garage for you.

Phoned Renault uk and spoke to the customer service manager, he told me the window regulator is no longer covered with a four year warranty. Instead Renault will now pay 75% of the bill, i was quoted £800 for two windows to be fixed at my local dealer!!! the answer was to sell the car! Renault are a complete joke and will never get my money again.

Yes thanks Gorazdanin, your pics were a great help. I should have used something more substantial and not just WD40 on its own. But< I enjoyed taking the door panel off so much, I can`t wait to do it again???? I will get hold of something more fitting, maybe borrow something from NASA as the inside of the door looked like something from one of the Apolo capsuls. Just a thought, If you take the armrest pocket of the door, leave the window in the up position, you can reach the motor with WD40. Thanks once again.

My megane hatch front passenger window stopped working a few months ago and renault quoted £386 to fix it. This morning I followed intructions from friendly advises above and fixed it. The door panel was the hardest part of the job and folleded instructions on its removal, along with its hidden scews. I cleaned all the contacts, sprayed everything with WD40 put it all back together (took about 3 hours total) and hey presto, it now works again. A great big thank you to all the friendly advise.

My megane 06 hatch had problems with its windows, 3 of them wouldn't move and one was down and i couldn't get it up. The warranty took care of it, now I have 4 NEW regulators and motors, one for each window. So today I worked on my megane 06 to prevent complications with the regulators and motors in the future. As it was said here on the forum, the reason to the problem is the water so I duct taped the electric motor in all four doors. Now the water cant reach the komponents, the components are isolated. I have pictures on how it looks if someone is interested?

Its condensation damage to the main capacitor, caps are like fast charge battery and they are used in the window controller to enable the one touch close, over time the paper inside them breakdown cause they get wet, this causes it to discharge and the window goes down by its self OR not charge at all 'window won't work'. IF you can put 12v stright to the motor and your window works fine then cut it open and change the damaged (cheap) componenets. Tape or hot glue it back together and voila.

Its a little crude BUT three repairs already and no problem since!! (we have two renaults)

just read all the problems about windows on megane's. had the same problem.2 door, one stuck up , one stuck down. three thing to check.motor, electric module,or regulator, once you have finally got the door panel off, haynes manual, remove the motor from the panel,three screws, wiring loom,and switches. clean and grease the regulator,thats the two strut the window runs on. the motor itself can be carefully removed from the regulator spool without it springing out all over the place. its easy enough.the window will now move up and down manually.reconnect the motor , it only moves in sharp bursts, one direction only.the major fault is possibly the module, this can not be bought separate, i got 2 second hand motors from a scrapyard with modules 80 quid, fit them my self in 2 hours, i hope this will help others with the same problem.

Just spoke to Renault... although they admit this is a common fault they are not prepared to help if your car is more than four years old. They say if enough people complain then they may review it so my advice to you is to complain. Apparently on the older models they failed to design the windows properly so water gets in. Apparently the regulator itself costs £200 so you are looking at around £300 to repair it at a Renault dealer. I just checked around and you can actually buy the regulator for less than £50.

This has just happened to my 2003 Renault Megane Hatch. It has 45k miles on it. It started by the passenger window acting crazy and now when i lock the car the window goes down. Argh! Good job the weather has been nice this week. I am on hold to renault to give them hell at the minute. I have had my car for 3 years in August and this will be the 35th fault. My advice.... never EVER EVER buy a Renault.

They were fantastic and advised that it did sound as though the regulators needed to be replaced which they would do as my car is under 4 years old. They booked my car in for me at my nearest dealer. The regulators were replaced and the wiring looms all under warranty - would have costed in excess of £500 otherwise. Excellent service and a well chuffed customer. Thanks to this blog for the advice.

Passenger window on 55 megane failed to go down local renault garage advised failed motor/regulator cost to replace 330 odd pounds, contacted renault care who stated that they knew of the problem, said the vehicles were covered to 4 years old, beyond that case by case basis, anyhow they will cover %90 of the cost and the other %10 customer contribution covers a 12 month warranty on the replaced part, I would call 0800 072 3372 before paying anything to your local renault dealer.

solution to get window back-up; remove the fuse for the problem window, fuse located left-hand side of glove compartment, fuses are marked 25 amp for front windows L and R and 40 amp for back. Once you have dis-connected fuse and re-connected fuse, close all doors and press the lock button on the remote twice. Window will go up, one or two inches at a time, open the door and repeat the process by removing the fuse and beginning again.... it may take a few times to get the window into fully closed position. remember to check that the window is checked from the outside position. Once in closed position, remember to remove the fuse until the vehicle is taken to mechanic for complete fix, probably just the terminals on the window regulator need cleaned and reconnected and sprayed with a waterproof repellant.

Had a megane since 2006 (GT) . Five times my winow motors have been replace (2 x driver & 3 x Passenger)
Warranty has run out and they said they'd waive the charge for me !! How great, i wouldnt have paid for it anyway. its a known renault fault, so they should be fixing it for me!!

My front passenger window on my megane hatch (04) stopped working and was quoted £283 by Arnold Clarkes to fit a new regulator. I searched the web and found the cheapest price for new parts, which also included vat, total price was £58.75. They were very friendly and helpful, suggesting I ring them if I needed instructions whilst fitting. See below for details.

I came back to my 05 grand scenic today to find nsf window opened and window switch not working, so called renault who agreed to 95% of cost to replace regulator and also spoke to local dealer to get car in straight away. i followed instructions as per "maloc" (march 08) to get window back up.
Assuming they fix problem ok, i've got to say i'm very impressed as i'm 2nd owner of five year old car (in June '10) and bought car privately 6 weeks ago.

2008 Renault Megane sport 225 Lux. The drivers window has stopped working on 2 occasions.It was the regulator on both occasions.
The panoramic sunroof has also jammed I was told it had come off the rails,I had only used it once. Fortunately the work was completed under warranty. Now looking to PX for a Focus ST. Renault, I wouldn't have one given me !

Hi all.

I wanted to say thanks for the advice below as it has managed to get me through a tricky situation earlier. My 53 plate 1.5 Dci has had a few Gremlins, mainly electrical in the two years I have owned it. Firstly the window decided to start working intermitantly over the past year so I should have worked out this was due to happen. Basically after heavy rain the window would only go a couple of cm down or up with each push of the button, finally the other week it decided to go down only and even when pulling up on the button it went down. The only way to sort it was to get out of the car and double lock it so the windows all closed. That worked fine till tonight when it decided to go down on it's own and not come back up.

Finally after wrestling with it for 2 hours in the cold and dark I have managed to manually wind the window up and have removed the plug so it can't fudge itself again. I'm pretty fed up with the car as its electrics are useless. We went for a panoramic roof to make the most of the sun, unfortunately this stopped working pretty much when we bought it. The only saving grace is the fact it does 50mpg min and only costs £35 to tax.

After having buying an Audi a few months ago and thoroughly loving it I would say this will be the last Renault I will buy. They may be quirky but they are built with terrible electrics.

There are 2 problems with these doors. Firstly the window seals let too much water in and secondly, the drain hole is covered by the rubber, so when the door is shut and it is raining lots, the inside of the door becomes a swimming pool. This environment causes the contacts in the regulator to corrode. If your window stops working, don't pay Renault to fix as the regulator is OK, just the contacts are dirty. Clean the contacts and then apply silicon or something similiar to seal it. Also, get under yours door and locate the drain hole and make some form of hole in the rubber to allow the water to drain when the door is shut. Save yourselve a fortune which you can then save to buy something that works!!

most likely the window regulator has gotten damp, my 2003 meganes passenger window failed to work afew months ago so i had a look to see what the problem was, remove the 2 torx screws at the bottom of the door panel, use a flat screwdriver to pop off the door handle cover then remove the torx screws there, use small flat screwdriver too pop off the small round cover behind the door opening handle and remove that screw, now the hidden screw! remove door pocket by prizing it up under the left hand side then the right until it comes up, now you have to prize up the panel that the pocket was in, use a flat screwdriver along the bottom to pop it up, it will swing upwards on its plastic hinges and you will see the screw in the centre of the door, remove it, the outer edge of the panel can be hard to pop i used large screwdriver moving around it and levering, lift up the panel slightly to unhook it from the top, lean panel back towards you and you will see the regulator, my door had a lot of condensation inside it which causes the problem in damp weather, unclip the wiring from the bottom of the unit, remove small philips head screw from top of the unit and then lever out the bottom clips as your pulling off the unit, with the unit removed you will see that it has a circuit board inside it, this is what gets damp and stops it working, i used a heat gun to dry it out or a hairdryer will do the job as well, only takes a few minutes, when your sure its good and dry refit it back on the door and plug in your wires again, now turn on your ignition and check if your window is working, just a small amount up and down will do to confirm it, now what i did was spray the unit with a wax sealer, i had a can of wynnes body cavity sealer handy so thats what i used, its messy stuff but you could probably get other types of sealer which are cleaner to use, and thats it, just replace everything as you took it off, mines been working fine for 5 months now, beats paying out the 280 euro i was quoted for a full unit by renault!

Had a car full of snow as the front drivers window had failed like every one else has described. Have a 55 plate megane estate. had to drive 60miles in a blizard so not at all happy. Followed Nick from newports directions and window is now closed again and have removed front window fuses to prevent it happening again . Renault garage quoted me £500 to repair it. I looked on ebay and the window regulators are £50. A built in design fault to line Renaults pockets me thinks. Had a citroen- electrics were crap peugeot window did same, renault seems to be following suite. Conclusion = french cars are as effective as their Armies. Go Japanese or German seems to be the answer

have 03 megane in july 09 got out of the car i day pressed the remote key to lock the car and the rear passanger window went down then in jan 10 the same thing happened to the rear driver window, there is no noise from the motor when you press the buttons, spoke to renault said about 700 euro to fix needed motor and regulator replaced is this the case or could there be a fault elsewhere

Yes simple electrical parts on renault simply dont last. Everything is made cheaper these days and more complicated.I have renault megane 55 plate and my rear passanger window motor module has just gone.

Drivers window on our Megane went - under 4 years so the local Renault dealership covered the regulator replacement under warranty.
Not what you expect (window failing) but all credit to Renault, they repaired it at no cost (although if one fails after 4 years we're stuffed)

my passenger side window failed and wouldnt open at all ,then went out this morning and i thought that my window had been smashed,we have taken the door panel off and mest around with it , managed to get it half way up , ive no garage and have had to put clear plastic up till i can try and get it sorted out . i will try the batery and fuse thing tho . good luck everyone lol..

if your window will go up and down by itself (by hand/free) the problem is the window regulator clip has broken its a pain in the butt to get the door panel off to replace it and you will have to sort the cable out as it will look like a birds nest just done mine today and it took 2 1/2 hrs but that was in freezing temperatures (i reckon a renault mechanic could do it in a hour) total cost £4.57 (and thats for both passenger and drivers sides dont get fobbed off by the dealer saying that you need the whole regulator as you probably dont the part numbers are 7701209366 (rear) and 7701209365 (front) also front are green and rear clips are white and renault call them kit clips.

your eiectric window regulator will have broke , its a common fault and has happened to mine also . think its to do with rain dripping inside the door, you need to search on line for one , dont go near renault they were trying to charge me over £200 try 24/7 spares for the part i got one for £66 and it was a copy part but brand new and worked a treat "GOOD LUCK"

Like MGJ I sorted mine with simple WD40 treatment, although this wont fix every type of window failure. First you need to diagnose the fault. Common faults are the motor, the wiring loom and the control module.

I fixed mine by taking the door apart checking:

1) The motor - by applying a 12V source to the two contacts that the control module interfaces with. This was fine
2) The regulator cables - visual inspection as these can fray due to water ingress. Also fine
3) The control module on the top of the motor - by process of elimination it had to be this. If you've heard clicking coming from your door prior to the window dropping its likely to be this.

Its well documented that its water ingress that causes this to malfunction. I flooded it with WD40 and left it on a radiator overnight. Put it back on in the morning and it functioned fine. Bought some self amalgamating tape and wrapped the unit up in that to prevent further water ingress and then put the door back together again.

I do like zero cost repairs.

(I did this after a year of driving round with the fuse out and the widow permanently up)

after taking my 54 plate to renault to fix the roof that i have barely used, they have managed to give it back to me with the rear window not shutting. they failed to tell me this and i took it back today. they have quoted £429!!!! to fix it, saying it is the cable to the regulator, which you can not buy seperately!! or can you??? are they all on commission? waiting to hear their response from Renault customer services. nothing but problems and only done 25000 miles!

yeah i have just had this prob too. called electrician out who said that ould cost £300 to fix! only bought the car private 2 weeks ago. couldnt afford that and hadnt read these comments so got them to secure window up using cable ties and tape for now, they removed the faulty motor, as the regulator is ok, but you can only buy the motor with regulator. found loads on ebay for around £75 but cant get bloodt door panel off to even have a go myself and im clueless!

My 55 Megane had each of the front windows wind themselves down whilst I was away from the vehicle (at separate times) and then refuse to go up. On both occasions it was in a car park and I was very lucky the car wasn't robbed and it wasn't raining.

The procedure to get the window up is 1. disconnect the battery (earth terminal) 2. reconnect the battery 3. press the deadlock on the remote. The window will go up a couple of inches. Repeat till the window is all the way up. I took the fuse out of the window system to be sure it won't go back down. The second time it happened the AA man said it was the third Megane he'd seen that day with the problem.

Both times the regulator replaced by Renault. However just lately the passanger window won't go down at all and now the driver's window only inches down and up.

I too will never buy another Renault.

Mine is actually a 2005 Megane. Window regulator replaced under warranty 12 months and 8 days ago and it went again yesterday. Dealer unable to offer anything in terms of 12 months is 12 months... but suggested I call Renault customer services.... they were brilliant, no hassle agreed to pay 95% so its cost me less that £15.... and they offered car while mine off road, but was fixed in just over an hour.... the magic number to call is 08006340509. Not sure how helpful on first time fault out of warranty but anyone with repeat problems could try...JD

I had this problem with my girlfriend's '07 Megane II. The problem was caused by water entering the motor/regulator wiring connectors. It was solved by removing the connectors, cleaning them with fine sandpaper and then a liberal spray with WD40. The main problem was removing the door trim to access the motor. Company in N.Ireland fixes these. Hobson Electronics 028 8772 7007. Not hard to pay at £50 plus VAT. Phone for instructions on regulator removal etc.

They repair the flickering and dead dashes as well. Around £80 if the miles haven't jumped. Well worth a call.

Phoned Renault and was advised that the warranty had not been extended on ALL models. Unfortunately, I was not able to go through our local dealer because they have gone bust?! However, Renault have done the almost decent thing and paid for 1 of the 2 regulators which have failed less than 8 months out of warranty. As stated earlier, it seems that the problem is due to water in the door - with our climate, what chance do we have?? I know several Renault owners with other models who have had exactly the same problem. I love the car in every other respect, such a shame about this common fault!

My drivers window stopped working last week (in the middle of a heat wave which was handy) I read that the Renault warranty has been extended on the regulator/motor so phoned the local dealers and it was correct. Took it in yesterday and they checked it over and found that the fault was caused by the regulator, it's on order and could take about 2 weeks but isn't going to cost anything. Well worth a phone call to the dealers, my first quote was £190 for the part.

It's not just the Megane - my 04 plate Laguna Privelege has just lost use of both front windows - local Renault dealership quoted £300 PER WINDOW to fix! Having read your experiences I will contact Renault and let my handy husband loose on the windows to see if he can resolve the problem.

My daughter's 55 Renault Megane is costing us a fortune in window regulators. Had 1 replaced under warranty, another 1 went about 2 months ago and now yet another 1 has gone. Cost of repairs at garage so far well over £800. Guy at garage said it was such a common fault that they are now stocking the part as standard! We, too, will never buy another Renault. My husband is phoning Renault tomorrow to discuss the problem. Do you think we should all be writing to Watchdog? Definitely will never touch another Renault!!!

Hi Claire, i have had same problem on my passenger rear door window...i did what Maloc suggested and removed and replaced fuse and then locked door twice...window went up about two inches...repeated this until window was fully closed...problem solved until i can get onto renault to try to get them to fix the problem...cheers Maloc...

I've just had window regulator on my 55 megane 2 replaced by Arnold clark. The car is out of warranty but Renault have extended the warranty of the regulators by 1 year ,although it seems they failed to tell anyone.
There is a catch. there is a £78 diagnostic fee but if the regulator is faulty then everything is free as under warranty. However If the fault is down to the loom it will cost a additional £180 plus labour costs.

i just bought a megane cabriolet and the drivers window stopped working and also the passenger rear window.after reading all these comments i decieded to dismantle the door .i played around with the connections by unplugging and reconnecting and to my delight both windows are working now

Re:- Rear window locking down on 05 Scenic.--- I had removed the door panel with a view to detaching the glass to wedge up temporarily, then spotted Maurice Haynes Comment ( March 2009 ) about removing fuses etc. Instead, what I tried was to unplug the harness from the motor - shut the door -lock the car ( double press the fob ) - then unlock the car - open the door - reconnect the motor - close door and relock, the window will go up approx 2 inches. Keep repeating this sequence until window is closed then leave the plug off the motor until a proper repair can be effected. Note :- Taking the door panel off is in some ways easier than trying to access the fuses.Thanks again Maurice.

I have had window opening issues on my 2003 megane twice this week on separate windows. First window i took to local dealership where entire window mechanism was replaced at a cost of £324. Second window, not wanting to spend £324 again had a go myself, mechanism is not faulty, regulator within mechanism is faulty, this can be easily removed and replaced with one from a breakers at little cost. Renault will not tell you this as should you carry out work based on their advice and be hurt, electricuted, they would be held legally liable and responsible, thus it is renualt policy to advise entire new mechansim is required as regulator cannot be brought individually from dealership.

I have an 06 megane and same happened to me saturday. Locked car twice after putting stuff in the boot, passenger window wound all way down and button no longer operated it. Read about method of removing fuses, removed both 25 and 40 amp fuses as per the diagram in the car, locked the car, replaced, locked and it wound up 2". Repeated the process until it locked shut, then removed fuses (so it cannot happen again) booked straight into dealer for replacement. The dealer seemed to know what i was talking about without describing the problem in depth and said he would order spare part.

Hi i had the same problem with the regulator or module that sits on the bottom of the motor , my window would'nt close, and this happened to me on a saturday night(nothing open until monday) If this happens to you this is what done to close it until i could get another reg/module from a scrappy's. I took the door panel off (which is a feat in iteslf) found the motor, unscrewed(star drive) the reg/module from the motor , then i got two long bits of wire , maybe 3mm then i put these wires straight into the motor and had a friend put the other ends onto the battery , one onto the pos(live)and one onto the neg(neautral), clicked the window switch and it shut. bought new reg/mod from scrappy's (£10)on the monday and fitted then taped up with electrical tape , door panel back on and cost me a tenner no probs since.

Tried Renault for repair outwith the 3 year warrantly since it seems to be a common fault and they coughed up £80 which is better than nothing. However with the number that seem to be going wrong they should have been recalled. Will never buy another Renault

Hi I have a 2005 megane and have had nothing but trouble with it. It is just one problem after another. I have already had passenger side window motor and regulator replaced under warranty and now they have gone again. I also have a problem with driver side window which appears to be a loose connection. When i bought the car i loved it but the money i have spent on it recently (new steering column £500)among other things) i intend to sell asap and will not touch renault again.

Folks, this is a common issue with water destroying the regulator....if you are a sufferer from this awful fault...get it replaced as soon as you get home take the door card off and insulate the regulator as much as you can without obstructing the mechanism. Could save you a fortune. i have wrapped mine and wires in electrical tape to protect it!

YEP,2004 megane well glad i am not alone, i have had ponding water in both doors and replaced the regulators (3 times under warranty) 2wice at my own cost, happened in glasgow in the pouring rain and then had to drive all the way home to dumfries with the window down...............just looking at golfs now as i wouldnt wish a megane on my worst enemy(regulator has gone again and is getting fixed at cost of £300 pounds ) tommorow. oh the joys

Just got the same fault with the drivers door window,2004 megane, renault wont fix it for me under warranty,tried that route today,luckily the renault garage did strip the door down to see what the problem was, so i've got to just replace the regulator, then rebuild the door panel, i've bought the regulator from a place in leicester called gsf car parts. Genuine part for £78.50 +vat. Will be emailing RENAULT UK TO TELL THEM WHERE TO STICK ANY FUTURE SALES. FIRST AND LAST RENAULT, WAS LOOKING AT THE NEW MEGANE

Just had the same problem with my drivers window. Cost £300 to mend. The regulator and the motor were not broken but there is another component that comes with them that drives it and you can't buy this part on its own..........renault rip off really as manufacturers fault and should be part of a recall.
Another fault is front passengers door well is full of water after it rain.....rain water is what probably knackers the regulator in the first place.....window seals are also rubbish.....Renault must be rubbing there hands at all the extra business!!!!

We have the same problem: driver's side window stopped working a few months ago on my 2004 Megane. As it was well out of warrenty I put up with it for now (thinking I would fix it myself when I got chance).

However, yesterday evening I locked my car at the supermarket, came back to find the back off side window open!! It would not budge with the switches... drove it home parked it in the garage and pulled the window up with a little help from the motor.

This morning I got a few things out of the car, locked it and the window went straight down again!! Motor must be fine. Is this a regulator issue?

Following on from my last comment i have just phoned Renault where i bought the car, they will fix the regulator under warranty for me after i had ago but will charge you for the band that goes from the regulator to the motor and labour as apparently wiring is not covered on warranty?????? hey????, therefore you are facing a large bill anyway? p- llllllllease? does that not defeat the object of warranty? they charge £70+ to change a light bulb for you as they have to take the bumber off to get to it and then find a loop hole to get money anyway from a common fault they should of recalled when they realised it was a common fault, or at least fix the common fault free. My answer, DONT BUY RENAULT, BUY PARTS FROM A SCRAP YARD OR EBAY, DO IT YOURSELF OR EVEN BETTER BUY ANOTHER CAR.

Yep my 2004 renault megane passenger side front window has stopped working, i took it too a friends garage and the regulator and the motor has gone, £220 just for the parts required. Following on from my far from joyess event trying to change the headlight bulbs in the thing this is getting too much to bare? it's a car, supposed to get you from A-B, there should not be so many issues attached to a vehicle suppossedly designed to m,ake your life easier? my advice is ring the garage you bought it from and hassle them big time to fix the problem for free, if it is a common fault then they should recognise it as such.

I can't add an answer, but it has just happened to me. If it helps anyone out there, there is an extended warranty on the windows of 4 years. Mine is just 4 years old and I'm facing a bill of £700 for two windows.

My 04 Scenic's had 2 go- broken not electrical fault. ie when window can be lifted by hands on glass. Power Windows of Blackburn do a replacement regulator minus motor for £55. (motor on mine was still perfect) Look on Frenchcarforum for extra info. Not too difficult to fit if you're handy.

remove rear door window switches and check for corotion of the wirers where the harness plugs into the switch. ther is no need to remove the door panel

I have a 54 plate megane with a history of four window regulators failing. have written to MD of Renault UK to complain as they only offered a small percentage of the cost of the final one, which was one year outside of the warrantee period, will see what happens.

I have a 54 plate megane and have had a total of 4 window regulators that have broken, 3 covered under warrantee, and one over the warrantee period which Renault UK offered a small proportion of the cost. I have written a letter of complain to the MD of Renault UK, let's see what happens!

Thanks maloc, your suggestion got my window back up, now just got to persuade Renault that it's a known fault and see if they will fix it. Unfortunately it's a 54 plate....

Hi, I have exactly the same issue on 04 Megane today. Arnold Clarke Garage said it is out of warrenty and will cost £250.00 to replace regulator and possibly loom which will cost extra. Is your car fixed now and if so what did you do? These are also some additional comments/answers on warranty of 4 years or 50K milage is this correct?

I have got a Megane CC with the same problem on just the drivers window and found yesterday that if it sticks about 2/3 inches from closed, press up FIRST on the switch in the back seat, keep that pressed then press up on the switch in the front door panel, weird but true.

I have had the same problem on my 04 megane (drivers side has completed locked up 2inches from closed, passenger side is erratic). Took it to Benfield who said the regulators are both faulty and they cost £220 each + labour. Total cost will be £635.60. I asked if Renault will bear at least some of the cost and they contacted them to get a negative reply. I also contacted them getting the same reply and the explanation of no courtesy contribution - out of warranty and did not buy direct from them (even though my mother did and I bought the car from her after 3 years in excellent condition). Current mileage: 27000 !!!!! This was my first and last Renault.

the problem with these cars is not the window regulator but the control module between the regulator and the switch. due to the way the module sits on the bottom of the regulator water justs run down in to the module and shorts it out . unfortunately you can't get the module seperately from the regulator and that costs about £200 . when i checked mine after it stuck down i found that the module recieved the signal from the switch but not through the module to the regulator although i could work the window regulator manualy

The problem is one of two things wiring loom or window reg
The window reg will be covered under warranty only if the car has less than 50k(miles) on it unfortunatley if it is the wiring loom it will not be but it only costs £24.00 but you will have to pay to get it fitted which should only take half an hour labour at the very most (I KNOW THIS BECAUSE IT HAPPENED TO BOTH MY MEGANES)

I have 2005 megane my drivers side stuck down. locate drivers side fuse remove then replace. make sure all doors are shut press lock button on key twice window should move about an inch remove fuse and replace,keep repeating untill window is shut. dont forget to press unlock each time it worked for me. there are two fuses for windows one for drivers side the other for passenger and back.on mine the top one is drivers side hope it works for you.

Hi Claire. To follow up on my last reply. I've been to the Renault dealer and I'm having the back window regulator replaced under warranty too! :) In the meantime they've managed to jam it shut till the part arrives!

Hi Claire. I had the same problem with the Passenger front window on my 05 Megan. It kept opening by itself and then wouldn't always close and eventually stopped working altogether. Brought it to a service center and they replaced the front passenger window regulator under warranty. Front windows are covered for 4 years so you should take it to a Renault Service garage.
Yesterday The back driver side opened itself and now wont budge!!! I phoned the garage and apparently the back windows are only covered by warranty for 2 years!!! I waiting to hear if renault will cover it as it is a common fault with Megans!

Hi Claire,
If all the other windows work from the master switches on the driver's door then its the same problem I have!
The fault is the window regulator on the driver's door. It requires removing the door panel and replacing the regulator. Seemingly its a common fault.
I'm trying to find out how to remove the panel.
