How can I fix my VCR?

When I record something on my VCR (Magnavox MCV604), I can't see anything when I try playing back the cassette.It becomes all blackish. Can someone help me?

Have you got the video channel set correctly ?
Are you using a scart or an ordinary lead ?
Try using the TV remote to go to AV/EXT if you have a scart.
