My key fob radio control central locking stopped working suddenly on my 2002 2.0 Ford Focus - central locking still worked fine using the key manually in the lock, so it wasn't the secretive fuse no. 63 (a failure of which can cause central locking to fail completely).
I tried replacing the battery in the key, and removing the connections from the radio receiver in the driver's foot well (had heard this can remove static build-up which can cause a problem). None of this worked.
I did to this to re-program the key: turn key to position 1 in the ignition and then turn it to position 2 and back to position 1, 4 times in 6 seconds, the 'lights on' chime will sound, and the car immobiliser LED (above the clock) will stay on, then take the key out of the ignition and press one of the buttons on the fob. Wait 10 or so seconds. This worked.
The manual that came with the car specified a different sequence to this which didn't work. Thanks to this forum I have got round a major headache - thanks again for all the help and advice!
