I just replaced 4 capacitors with 16 volts. My Cyberhome DVR 1600 is powering up.

The Shottky Diodes are D8 and D9 on the power supply board next the transformer. The diodes are labelled SB540.

Would have been nice to see a photo of placement of the offending diodes. Give people a lots more chance to see if they want to attempt the repair.

I am sure many people could do there own repair if they could identify the culprits that over heat.

My CyberHome 1600 would not come on at all.
When I opened it I could see the capacitors were blown/
raised tops, I read how this is a problem with this unit.
I changed all the taller capacitors except the 400v, put it
back together**** tadaaaa**** It's back on and working fine now.
I was about to trash it, till I read how I COULD FIX IT
Thanks for the tips you guys.

Got some useful info from this site so decided to add what I found with my CH-DVR 1600ME2. The capacitors have less than 10 volts across them but if bulged on top need to be replaced. Capacitors are damaged by a faulty Schottky Barrier diode. Lift one leg of each of the 2 large diodes (side by side) and compare resistances in both directions. If vastly different replace the one giving the low resistance. A 1N4719 will work but will generate more heat. Unit really needs more ventilation holes at the sides.
Found that my unit had a "figure of 8" two pin plug so after making sure the internal fuse was connected to "Live" of the mains wall plug I marked the top. Unit should have been hard wired and not have two pin plug. Best not to open cover without using an isolation transformer. Cannot find any info on whether these units should have an earth connection but they do not look double insulated inside. Will try and see if earth connection causes any earth-loop noise problems.

It CAN be fixed - I am amazed. was going to chuck my cyberhome 1600 after all its many faults and then went dead. Then I read above. Been and bought all 6 of the 10 volt Capacitors (replacing them with 16 volt ones) from Maplins (total £2.48) and soldered them in and hey presto a fully functioning machine again. brilliant - I am dead chuffed. Thanks for the info you guys. (only one of my capacitors looked a bit dodgy - swollen at bottom end more than top but as they are so cheap I though I would change all 6)

Hello from germany ;-) .
Jakdedert is right. I searched the internet because of the problem with my DVR 1600. I replaced 3 capacitors with 'bulged tops' . Two 2200 mf and one 1000 mf that have a voltage rating of 35 V ( too much I know, but does not matter ).
Works now fine again.

The most common problem with these units is power supply related. Once the power gets funky, all sorts of strange behaviors result. The main culprit, IME is some power supply capacitors are under-rated. If you open up the unit and see electrolytic capacitors with 'bulged' tops (should be perfectly flat) that's the problem.

They should be replaced with capacitors having a voltage rating of at least 15 volts, preferably 25. The ones which had failed on mine were only rated at 10 volts.

Doing that, and adding heatsinks to the large semiconductors on that board--plus adding a cooling fan, although that might have been overkill--fixed mine. It had much the same symptoms as yours.

It cannot be fixed. Search the internet and you will see hundres of people had similar failures with the Cyberhome 1600 DVR. The components, especially the laser diode, are very poor quality made in Asia with no quality control. All the units will fail and cannot be repaired - many have tried. Cyberhome got sued much of its assets were seized for infringment in June 2006, and the company is now out of business, and the website is gone. Just throw it away.
