handwash function on hotpoint aquarius wd420?

an old problem with hotpoint wm`s is when trying to balance the load the machine will try but after several attemps will sit there doing nothing. This will often happen on small/single item loads especially heavy towels bath mats etc as it can`t sense an even load, try larger load or to prove a point try without a load and the machine will go through it`s cycle.
