during the night a banging and clanking noise was heard from the up staires airing cuboard , only the pump and by- pass valve are in the airing cuboard.the boiler is wall mounted in the kitchen down stairs.the boiler has a smell of electrical burning.any ideas, thanks tony
Tony sounds like your pump has had it and needs replacing. The banging from the boiler is where the water isnt circulating and the overheat stat has come into operation

do you think the banging and clattering was the pump failing.and that may have caused a fuse to blow, loosing the power.
