How do I fix a JVC GR-AXM210 that eats tape?

There is something fauty with the tape feed, I put the tape in and it makes a funky noise and then the camera shuts down, this is in play mode and record mode, I don't know what is wrong how do I fix it exactly?

I suspect it is a faulty tape and the camera is powering down to avoid lacing it around the drum and potentially damaging the tape transport unit (costly to replace). Try a brand new tape.
