How to replace reclining sofa pull cord?

I bought a replacement cord, but the plastic bracket that is screwed into the side is VERY hard to reach. The seat cushion is in the way and we have tried everything to push it out of the way but it is impossible. Is there some trick to getting to the bracket? It is a Lane reclining sofa.
