Mend Peugeot 207 Overheating Engine Temperature

Faulty Engine Over heating waning liight?

My 2009 Peugot 207 1.4, the engine overheating light is flashing but the engine is not overheating. The light sometimes goes off for several miles, then reappears. A new Sensor has been tried but does not cure the fault. I suspect there is a fault either in the Temp Gauge or the ECU.
Any suggestions
