Mend Ford Mondeo Noise

whats this noise?

have a 98 R mondeo 2.0 glx estate very time you start her up and move either forward or backwards you hear a high pitch shrill from under the bonnet possibly more to the near side, and then you can carry on driving and nothing but switch off and restart move on and the shrill noise goes off again.???

It sounds like a loose or worn fanbelt,the belt slips on the pulley causing a squealing noise,ask a garage to check the fan belt tension,a mechanic should be able to do this with his hand,you dont need special equiptment.Adjustment or replacement shouldnt cost much.
