how do I stop my citroen picasso engine revving high when stationary?

My 2004 citroen picasso xsara is revving when stationary at traffic lights, turning right etc. RAC cudnt find fault code and so don't know what's wrong. As car gets warmer the fault gets worse and as soon as I take my foot off Gas car speeds along too.
