Bag of spanners in gearbox?

I start my Peugeot 307 1st time it purrs like a kitten but after I have driven half a mile or so it sounds like a bag of spanners has been thrown into my engine. Switch it off. Start it up and it purrs like a kitten. Then sometimes it can run quietly the first trip but make the noise whilst you are slipping it into drive or reverse on the second trip!!. Once you get off on your journey it sounds wonderful. Any suggestions.?

Sorry forgot to mention it is automatic, fine in park or neutral drives like a dream but just has this ballbearing or spanner like noise on its first few times of use every day. But only when you try to slip it in to gear or you pull up at lights or junction it feels like it judders and wants to stop along with this weird noise. Thanks for your reply.
