hotpoint rta 42 fridge freezer?

the thermostat setting switch does not seem to properly switch off the motor when the thermostat temperature is actually reached. the switch mechanism just keeps clicking and ticking as if it wants to turn itself off - which can be done manually either by turning the setting Up OR down. But until the switch is turned the motor keeps running.
